Is Aging Depressing or Inspiring?
Aging has historically been perceived as a pathology rather than potentiality. Aging is only partially an atrophy of our physicality but for the most part it is actually an ascension to wisdom, wholeness and authenticity (as beautifully said by Jane Fonda).
When we were younger we were born whole – “we had everything” (as Dr Wayne Dyer says). Then we grew up questioning who we are, needing to be popular and trying to fit in. Now in the 2nd half of our lives we somehow are finding peace with who we are, we accept what is, we respect differences rather than judge and criticize and just allow the flow of life with less resistance. So what do we do and how do we live our lives in this final Act to give it meaning and purpose?
It certainly is not a time to give up and wait for end times and it is nothing to fear. It is in fact a time of continued growth – the body may decline but the spirit can still ascend through reflection, review and revision of the journey of your life thus far. What have I left unfinished, what relationships do I need to heal, who do I need to forgive (including myself) – so you can free yourself from your past and change your relationship with your past. You can embrace all of who you are!
It is through this last Act that we complete the cycle to where we began where “we had everything” and we ascend to wisdom, wholeness and authenticity.
Be inspired by Jane Fonda and her insights – she is a fine example of ageing gracefully.
